Year opening: how to rid the world of starvation

The opening of the new academic year will take place next Monday, 6 September, with a ceremony devoted to the problem of poverty and hunger in third world countries. Wageningen UR chairman, Professor Aalt Dijkhuizen, will formally open the academic year at 16.00 in the Aula, after which the Dutch minister of development cooperation, Agnes van Ardenne, will lecture on her development policy. Wageningen Professor Rudy Rabbinge will give a lecture on the plans he drew up for the UN secretary general Kofi Annan on how to harness science and technology to improve food security in Africa. Earlier in the day an expert conference will take place on the issue of how small-scale producers in developing countries can become partners of big western food companies through global food chains.
