Harm Bartholomeus is again one of the best adventure racers of Europe this year.
The final competition of the West European Raid Series, a forty-hour race in the Harz area of Germany during the weekend of 12 and 13 September, was a letdown for their X-Bionic teammates Arnaud Temme and Michiel Braakhekke. The Wageningers were competing for the lead against a professional French team in the first part. 'The first fifteen hours were easy and we could navigate better than the French', relates Temme, a PhD student with the Land Dynamic group. But during the long uphill cycling race, Braakhekke's knee developed problems. This student of Forest and Nature Management had been nursing a knee problem since a multi-day competition in Poland in spring this year. At that time, he had to give up eventually. /Yvonne de Hilster
