If TV commercials are anything to go by students are incapable of cooking
anything more than a deepfreeze pizza or pouring boiling water over a
packet of noodles. Is this also the archetype in the Wageningen student
houses? Wb decided to find out for itself for a few weeks, and joined
students for their evening meal.

Part 5: Dijkgraaf 6C
Inhabitants: 10 (2 of whom come from abroad)
Characteristics: once a week a three-course meal, smoking is allowed after
the meal, wine regularly with the meal, two types of beer, napkins
Favourite: vla (with the international students), Kees’ pasta (see recipe)

Since Thijs, a second-year biology student, has been living in Dijkgraaf 6C
a three-course meal appears once a week on the table. He enjoys cooking and
was given a thick cookbook by his corridor-mates for his birthday. This
evening Thijs has prepared two recipes with puff-pastry from the book. The
first course, a cocktail of fresh and tinned salmon, is a family recipe. “I
started to cook when both my parents were working. I like making special
dishes. Usually I follow a recipe once, and after that I can cook it
without the book,
