Visa delays for foreign students

Questions posed in Dutch parliament

The Dutch labour party (PvdA) posed questions in parliament this week about
the inadequacy of the procedures for issuing visas to non-EU students by
the IND. The majority of students due to start at a Dutch university this
year are still waiting for a residence permit.

The Platform for International Education announced recently that 65 percent
of these students still do not have a visa, despite the fact that the
academic year started last week. The IND was already aware that this
problem was likely to arise, and had already therefore set up a shortened
visa application procedure. But this does not seem to be working. While it
cannot confirm these figures, Nuffic has been flooded with complaints.
Spokeswoman Maureen Bergman: ÔÇťAugust was the worst. The number of
complaints has now gone down, but there are still people waiting for their
permits.
