Triple graduation

Bolivian couple Ximena Cadima-Fuentes and Ivan del Callejo received more than their MScs last week. They also graduated into parenthood when their baby Elias was born a few days before the MSc ceremony. Experiencing pregnancy and a birth so far away from home was a challenge in itself. Having to communicate all our questions in English was a big thing, but also we were confronted by so many customs that are different from those in Bolivia. Women here usually have their babies at home, but we preferred going to the hospital rather than giving birth in a student flat, explained del Callejo. Cadima: On the day itself, we were very worried by the fact that the midwife told us to wait until the last possible moment before going to the hospital. In Bolivia, we would have gone into the hospital a few days ahead of time to prepare for the birth. Now they are waiting until Elias is one month old to be able to fly back home. Cadima's supervisor, Rommert van den Bos, was clearly moved by the whole episode: It is remarkable that they not only had a baby during their stay in Holland, but also managed to graduate on time.
