The discussion about the level of English in Wageningen continues to

flourish.
The debate on the centre page of this week’s Wb is devoted to the question
whether lecturers should have to take a compulsory course to ensure their
English up to standard or whether this will increase the already
considerable pressure on their shoulders. The most balanced opinion comes
from Professor Lijbert Brussard of the Sub-department of Soil Quality: “I
think it’s a good idea that a language course should not be optional. But
before sending everyone on a course the skills of each lecturer should be
tested. Many do not need to improve their English. A course would increase
work pressure at first, but the ultimate results should lead to a decrease
in workload in the longer term. And the increased workload arose to some
extent as a result of the introduction of the new programme and should
disappear after this year.
