Tartlétos third in warm Veluweloop

Third place was the most the athletes of Tartlétos could manage in this year’s Veluweloop relay race. They were the fastest student team though.

Conditions were far from ideal for the 80-kilometre relay race over the Veluwe, which starts and ends in Wageningen. It was warm and muggy on Saturday 10 September and many of the paths were muddy from the rain of the preceding days. Due to all kinds of work going on, the organizers had to pull out all the stops this year to find a suitable route for the runners and their supporters. At lap number seven, from the Emma Pyramid on top of the Posbank hill to Valkenhuizen, this meant a zigzagging route where a few runners lost their way, due to tiredness. 'That was a pity, but it didn't influence the results', reports Rik Hoevers from the organizing team.
Aeolus, with ex-students from Enschede, made off with the trophy once again. By a little more than three minutes, the runners of Tartl├ętos students' athletics club came in third, with a total time of five hours and over eleven minutes. VHL student Nout Jansen was the only member of the team to achieve the fastest time in a lap. Bringing up the rear among the student teams was SSR-W student society. They took almost eight hours to cover the eleven laps.
Fewer teams than last year took part in this 31 st edition of the race. There were 77 teams in total. 'We had a few cancellations at the last minute due to illness and injury', says Hoevers.
