Speelman wants farewell in Dutch

While Wageningen presents itself proudly as the first and only university with an international student council, rector Professor Bert Speelman let it be known last week that as far as he is concerned the Foundation Day celebration next year can be held in Dutch.

At the end of the ceremony this year in March, Speelman asked how many international students were present. Only a handful raised their hands, to which Speelman responded with the question whether next year’s ceremony should be held in English. During the meeting with students and personnel Speelman made his wish clear. ‘It is my farewell celebration, so we’ll do it in Dutch, at least the part that I do. What the new rector does is his own business.’ / JH
