Speelman strong

University rector Professor Bert Speelman is the sixth most powerful decision maker in the Dutch world of research and development. The Dutch monthly Natuurwetenschap en Techniek compiled a list, based on the budgets that research managers have at their disposal. Speelman has 390 million euros on the books, less than the 2.6 billion that the man at Philips, Dr Ad Huijser, has to spend, but more than the minister of agriculture Cees Veerman and more than his other university counterparts. Two of the sciences groups directors are also on the list: Professor Martin Kropff (26) of Plant Sciences and Ruud Huirne (36) of Animal Sciences. / KV
