Researchers should vote ‘yes’

Researchers would be well advised to vote yes in the referendum on the European constitution that will be held on 1 June. This is the advice of Eelco Denekamp, director of the EG-Liaison, an agency within the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs that advises on EU financing of research. ‘For the first time there is a chapter on science and research. This gives us a better position from which to negotiate for EU research funding.’ If the constitution is approved and introduced, procedures will improve and the position of science and research will be strengthened within EU policy, says Denekamp. ‘That will make us stronger in relation to the US and Japan.’ / JT
