Quicker visas for foreign experts

Foreign ‘knowledge workers’ need to be able to start work far quicker. The
Dutch government is hoping to help its ‘dynamic knowledge economy’ to
regain a footing by easing permit procedures for highly educated
foreigners.

At present there is a shortage of top quality experts in the fields of ICT
and fundamental research. The new streamlined procedures should mean that
non-EU knowledge workers can have a five-year work permit sorted out within
two weeks. Permit applications have been computerised, and since the
beginning of this year applicants can arrange both residence and work
permits at the same desk. The reduction in time to two weeks is unlikely to
be achieved however until the end of the year.
