Quick climate adjustments

The new research programme Space and Climate Adaptation looks as though it will be able to count on broad political support. Wageningen UR will make a considerable contribution. At a climate congress in Scheveningen on 29 November, prominent members of the government spoke, including the prime minister, Jan Peter Balkenende. Balkenende wants the Netherlands to speed up its process of adjusting to climate change. According to the prime minister, innovation and expertise will play a central role in this process. The scientists are ready, according to Professor Pavel Kabat of Alterra: ‘We already have enough expertise to start making investments in the necessary adjustments. I am convinced that we have a solid scientific foundation to be able to do this.’ The congress was well attended by regional representatives from provincial government, municipalities and water boards, as well as people from the private sector and conservation organisations. / MW
