Computer intruders are still attempting to get passwords out of students and staff at Wageningen UR.
Two weeks ago intruders broke into the Wageningen UR mail server and used it to send large quantities of spam. They gained access to the server after a few dozen employees and students had sent their login and passwords in response to a phishing mail. In the last week the ICT department has received many more reports of phishing mails, requesting passwords for e-mail accounts and also banking details. As far as ICT knows, the attempts have not been successful. The department has stepped up its surveillance of data traffic so that spammers’ use of the server is stopped quickly. Simon Vink, spokesman for the Executive Board, stressed that Wageningen UR never requests passwords or other confidential information via e-mail.
