Own begonia

A newly discovered begonia variety from Gabon has been named after the Wageningen chair of Biosystematics, Professor Marc Sosef. He is very flattered with ‘his’ Begonia sosefiana, although he does not expect to see many of them on Dutch windowsills. ‘They are a wonderful bright yellow, but they are quite small and require a lot of care. Here they are only likely to become hothouse plants at the most.’ The new begonia was found last year by Dr Johan van Valkenburg, a project worker at the Biosystematics Group, while he was making an inventory in the Moukalaba-Doudou National Park. The National Geographic Society financed the survey. / GvM
