‘No, sorry no speak English’
The debate on page 8 of Wb this week is devoted to the question whether the
level of English of students is really as bad as has been suggested
recently, and what can be done. A few comments.
Dr Peter Ho of the Environmental Policy group and member of the admissions
committee for Environmental Sciences:
“I understand that the education institutes say they cannot send students
away on the basis of their English. It’s a shame that the proposal to
introduce a compulsory Scientific English course has not been accepted.
This would raise the criteria for students. Something definitely needs to
be done. We could hold telephone interviews with prospective students, or
test them on location.
