System of patronage is crippling the continent

Two weeks ago a lecture series on Africa started, organised by Studium
Generale. First to give his view was Roel van der Veen, who works at the
Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is not optimistic about the future of
Africa, and explained why in his lecture. The kernel of his message: “There
is a logic to the breakdown of African states, and it has to do with the
internal dynamics of the continent itself.
