New ant

A PhD student discovered a new ant species along the A28 motorway near Hardewijk. Jinze Noordijk also found an example of an internationally threatened species of the socially parasitic ant Myrmica hirsuta. Noordijk is doing research on the role of motorway hard shoulders in the survival of insects and spiders. He collected insects and spiders in a trap consisting of a sunken empty yogurt beaker. The ants were then identified by ant expert Peter Boer, who discovered that one had characteristics associated with parasitic ants, but had not been previously described. The new species has been named Myrmica schenkinoides. / YdH
