Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO)

Incentive for open access publications

Researchers with an NWO grant can apply for five thousand euros for publishing their scientific articles in free academic journals. 'We are going to make it as easy as possible for researchers', says NWO chairman Jos Engelen. For the moment, he only wants to encourage scientists to publish in so-called open access journals rather than forcing them. 'But if raising awareness and encouraging researchers don't help, I am prepared to go a step further. Then I will make it mandatory for NWO researchers to publish in open access journals.' Academics prefer to publish in high impact journals. That is better for their careers. As long as such journals are not freely available, it will remain difficult to break that habit.
