Nectar bar

In the small arboretum on the Wageningse berg there is a small bar, made of wood. It’s not a bar with beer; the nectar in the flowers there is meant to attract butterflies. The nectar bar is a project of Arnold van Vliet of the Environmental Systems Analysis Group, who also devised the Nature Calendar. ‘There will be hundreds of nectar bars throughout the country,’ he tells. ‘We want to make people aware of what and when something happens in nature, and we want to know when butterflies are active. We will use the nectar bars to monitor them, to provide additional information to the Nature Calendar observations.’ The activity is part of the project Hier, sponsored by the National Postcode Lottery, which includes all kinds of activities to do with climate change. / MW
