Microscopes stolen

In the early hours of Monday 3 April two expensive microscopes were stolen from the Botanical Centre at De Dreijen. They were worth a total of 75,000 euros. Although security agents arrived quickly they could not prevent the thieves from making off with two microscopes that are vital to the plant research done in the centre. A third microscope was already in a bag, but was left behind. According to Henk Kieft, who works at the Botanical Centre, the damage is considerable. ‘It’s a disaster for us, as use the microscopes for nearly all our research. We do not have the money to just replace them, and it’s not yet clear whether the insurance will pay for them. Equipment worth less than 100,000 euros is not insured I understand.’ / JH
