Making Chinese dumplings is good opportunity to talk


A group of Chinese students in Wageningen had dinner together last Saturday
night. In the kitchen of one of the student flats they prepared dumplings
together, a traditional dish from the north of China. It was a good night
for conversation.

At six o’clock the kitchen in a Dijkgraaf corridor is crowded with a group
of twenty male and female MSc and PhD students from China. They have just
had a meeting of the Chinese Association of Students and Scholars in
Wageningen (CASSW) at which they talked about future activities like a bike
ride to the Hoge Veluwe. Now everybody is busy chopping the vegetables and
making the dough for the dumplings they are going to eat, stuffed and
boiled dough balls. In an attempt to find a western equivalent one of the
students compares it to ravioli. “It’s essential to chop the ingredients as
fine as possible,
