Lists, lists, lists

Hit parades, top-tens and citation indexes. Everyone loves lists. In the last few years league tables comparing universities have started to appear as well. They are intended to show up differences in quality between the education establishments, but the results are contradictory. There is hope, however. The ministry of education announced earlier this year that it plans to launch a Guide to Higher Education website. The website is expected to appear in January and should provide ‘objective comparative information’ on all courses provided by Dutch higher education institutes. This should be a positive development for Wageningen, as the site will probably based on the Guidebook to Higher Education, which this year voted Wageningen number one. That sounds considerably better than the nonetheless very respectable 108th place in the Times top-200 worldwide. / JH, HOP
