Letter to the editor
I would like to respond to the article by G. van Hofwegen, entitled
‘International students are crowding out the Dutch’ which appeared in Wb
31. I was appalled by the article and I know of many other international
students who felt the same way. Personally, I think the level of my MSc
here is lower than my BSc which I did abroad.
I believe the solution would not be in offering extra courses, but simply
to have stricter prerequisites for the background knowledge and fluency of
English for accepting students (both Dutch and international) to do an MSc
course here. Dutch students should not feel ‘crowded out’ but instead
should be proud to attend a university with a reputation which attracts
students from around the globe.
