Last Saturday there was an opportunity to take part in the unique Frisian
sport ‘fierljeppen’ in the sport park in Wageningen Noordwest. The word
‘fierljeppen’ can be literally translated as ‘jumping far’ and is a
variation on pole vaulting. It has been a pastime of young people in
Friesland for many centuries, originating from the need to cross ditches
and canals when searching for birds’ eggs in the spring. About fifty people
joined in the fun, most of whom did not make it dry to the other side.
