LEI on EU policy

Part of the EU agricultural policy should be financed by the member countries themselves rather than out of European subsidies. This was the advice issued by the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER) last week. LEI played an advisory role in compiling the proposal for SER. The Dutch government requested the advice in the hope that partial financing from the national governments, called co-finance, would reduce the costs of the agricultural policy for the Netherlands, which at present is a net payer into the Brussels fund. The SER, however, does not regard this as sufficient reason to change the policy. The effect of the policy on agriculture should be the main issue, and LEI director Jan Blom agreed on the matter. / JT
