Just missed

Against expectations, Professor Rudy Rabbinge of Wageningen University has not been elected chairman of the FAO Council. In the elections for the position in the supervisory body of the Food and Agricultural Organisation on 18 November, Rabbinge received precisely one vote less than his opponent, Said Noori Naeini of Iran. The Wageningen candidate was disappointed: ‘We have the impression from other countries that the elections were not entirely honest. Ambassadors were put under pressure. We are going to look into the matter, but it remains a sordid affair. Not only for me, but above all for the FAO. It’s not easy to get rid of an image of nepotism and messing about behind-the-scenes.’ / KV
