International rankings

A majority in the Dutch lower house wants the state secretary for education, Mark Rutte, to campaign for the creation of international ranking lists of higher education institutions. The ministers of education of the EU countries recently agreed that the performance of higher education establishments should be made public, but that ranking lists should not be compiled. Rutte is not against rankings, but does not regard it as his job to push for them. At the national level he thinks the job can be left to the press. ‘And I’m not sure that I can arrange for an international ranking list. That should be something for the European parliament, but they have no constitution. And it doesn’t look like they will have one soon.’ / HOP
