Imag building temporary shelter for Larenstein

It is certain that the new Forum building will not be ready by the date agreed, the start of the new academic year 2006-2007. The executive board cannot yet say when the building will be ready. Larenstein University of Professional Education will have to be housed somewhere else temporarily.

When building started, Wageningen UR assumed that it would be able to commence the coming academic year in the Forum building. At the beginning of this year, however, it was already clear that this was not going to be the case. In the contract that Wageningen UR has with the building contractor, the completion date is 1 November 2006, but even this date looks unlikely.

The executive board had hoped at the beginning of this year that the part of Larenstein located in Deventer would be able to move into the Forum building at the start of the new academic year. But this plan has had to be scrapped, and instead the old Imag building has been reserved for the University of Professional Education for the whole of the academic year 2006-2007.

When the Forum building will be ready, Wageningen UR spokesman Simon Vink cannot yet say. ‘We won’t know for a while yet.’ According to Vink, the executive board is ‘seriously disappointed’ about the delay, and is holding discussions with the building contractor about the completion date and the financial consequences of the delay.

Wageningen UR intended to finance part of the new construction by selling off old buildings. But these sales are now being delayed, as buildings have to be used for longer. Vink: ‘We do not want to say saying anything about the completion date yet because things may come to a lawsuit. We are looking carefully at the contract at the moment, and the contractor is probably doing the same.’ / KV
