Going to the Draughts World Championship - or maybe not

Draughts player Pim Meurs will have to wait a little longer for his first senior-level World Championship.

The Nutrition and Health student missed qualifying after losing one game, but last month the Brazilian organizers gave him the wild card place they can fill in themselves. 'That is great', said Pim to himself and he secretly jumped for joy. 'You can't play at a higher level than that.' But he won't be using his plane ticket. The World Championship has been cancelled because (in the official version) the organization did not get the permits in time for the construction of the mega-aquarium where the participants would be playing their games, on Rio de Janeiro beach. It may seem strange but the World Championship, which was due to start this week, has been postponed indefinitely. /Yvonne de Hilster
