‘Letter shows courage in retracting earlier position’

Wageningen UR Chairman of the Board Aalt Dijkhuizen published a declaration
earlier this week in an attempt to clear up the ‘misunderstandings’ of the
previous month (see Wb 30). Has he managed to convince the critics?

Professor Jan Douwe van der Ploeg, chair of rural sociology:
“If you want detailed comments you’ll have to go to others. I have said my
piece, but let me just make three short points. One, that it’s about
‘misunderstandings’ does not convince me, given the background to this
whole discussion. Two, I think it is a noble gesture that Dijkhuizen has
offered an apology to Pieter Vereijken. Three, I’m curious as to what the
reaction of the rector (Speelman) is. I find it odd that he remains
silent.
