Fires, housing shortage and Food academy

There were two small fires at the Bornsesteeg student flats in Wageningen last week. In the night of 29/30 June, fire broke out in a hall of the fifteenth floor. Several flats were evacuated by the fire brigade. It is thought that abandoned possessions were set alight. Two days later there was a fire in a container below the block. The damage was limited. ® NM

First year students in search of rooms
Student housing corporation Idealis can house about 350 Dutch first-year students at the start of the next academic year. About 540 are expected to be in need of a room. Idealis thinks it will be able to accommodate them all by May 2011. Six hundred rooms are needed for foreign MSc students too. There are not that many available in Wageningen, but the university is going to put MSc students up in hotels. ® AB
Food academy in Amsterdam
Wageningen University, Van Hall Larenstein, INHolland University of applied sciences and Wellant college of further education are to launch the Food Academy in Amsterdam on 1 February 2011. With MBO and HBO (vocational diploma and applied sciences degree) programmes, the new institute hopes to interest young people in the cities of the western Netherlands in green education and healthy nutrition. ® AB
