Dirty computers

A new system has been introduced to contain the problems caused by viruses on the student network HomeWURk. Infected computers are detected automatically and cut off from the network. A user with an infected computer who goes onto the internet is automatically directed to a website which informs him or her of the problem. It is then only possible to go to a few sites for updating Windows and anti-virus software. The system can only detect infection. Computer owners must prevent and delete viruses themselves, not always a simple matter. ‘There are already a few hundred infected computers, and are difficult to deal with because the viruses disable the virus scanner.’ Facilities management has special programmes available to destroy these viruses. / JH
