Debate on long-term students to be resumed

The lower house of the Dutch parliament is going to resume the debate on the cabinet’s plans to fine current students for taking too long about their studies. Labour party member Jadnanansing wants secretary of state Zijlstra to explain the legal footing of his plans.

This has been prompted by an article in yesterday’s NRC Handelsblad which claimed that fining current students would not be legal. State secretary Halbe Zijlstra thought that his plans were legally watertight.
Jadnanangsing has written to the secretary of state to ask for a written response ‘to the new facts’. Zijlstra will send Jadnanangsing’s letter to the lower house on Tuesday, after which the debate on long-term students will be resumed.
