Combined introduction days for international and Dutch students

The committee for the general introduction days (CAID) organises a week of
activities for new students every August just before the start of the
academic year. This year for the first time the international students will
join the Dutch students during the main part of the introduction week.

The international students will be placed in all-international groups and
will enrol from 17 August onwards, whereas the Dutch students start their
introduction programme on 14 August. The joint programme lasts until 20
August and includes a guided tour of Wageningen, a sports day, information
market, music and a street festival. Each night there will be parties
organised by the big student societies. The programme for international
students also includes a workshop on intercultural communication and an
integration game. The CAID only decided in January to hold a joint
introduction programme, after they received a request form the university
board. For the six committee members this has meant extra work as they have
had to rearrange the programme.

The university expects 410 international students to start either an MSc or
BSc programme in September. It’s not likely that all of them will join the
AID, but the committee is counting on a total of between eight and nine
hundred participants. The students will be split into groups of ten to
twelve, each accompanied by two mentors. So far no international students
have shown any interest in helping as mentors. Although the groups can be
accompanied by Dutch mentors, the CAID thinks it would be nice if new
international students are shown around by those who know what it’s like to
be a new international arrival in Wageningen. Students interested in
becoming a mentor will be given training during one weekend in June or
July.
