Professor Clive West died after a long illness on Friday 26 August. Five hundred people attended his funeral on Thursday 2 September in the old church in Bennekom
The 65-year-old professor of nutrition continued his work almost to the end. At the beginning of the summer he knew had little time left to live and made no secret of the fact. He used his birthday in July as an opportunity to say farewell to his colleagues in the sub-department of Human Nutrition, and friends continued to visit him at home throughout the summer. His death brings the departure of a distinguished scientist, who not only did pioneering research on nutrition in developing countries, but also helped to set up research facilities in those countries. He will receive posthumous recognition from the International Union of Nutritional Sciences next year.
