You may have noticed strange looking straw huts in a field alongside the road towards the A12 motorway and Ede.

At the Organic Farm Droevendaal they have released 3000 chickens on the recently harvested maize and clover fields. Animal nutrition researcher Dr René Kwakkel wants to see whether letting organically raised chickens feed on recently harvested fields is a feasible way of fattening them. The chickens will spend nine weeks on the fields before going to the butcher’s. The chickens spend the nights in the temporary accommodation made of the straw bales to protect them from foxes. Previous experiments have shown that the chickens do not stray further than six metres from their henhouses.
