Cheaper phone calls for SSHW tenants from January

As of 1 January next year all tenants in SSHW accommodation will be able to
phone through the Internet. SSHW is cancelling its contract with telephone
company KPN, and tenants will be able to chose themselves the system and
company they want to use.

Phoning through the Internet, officially called Voice over Internet
Protocol (Voice over IP), has been tested by a number of student tenants.
You plug a special telephone line into the internet connection box in your
room, after which the computer can be reconnected. SSHW is so pleased with
the results of the tests that it will end its contract with KPN at the
start of the new year. Vice director of SSHW Jan Harkema is pleased: “VoIP
is a good alternative, which means we are rid of the problem of corridors
that don’t pay their bills.
