Bean sprouts likely source of EHEC
Bean sprouts are very likely to be the source of the EHEC-outbreak in Germany, reports the Robert Koch Institute today.
The warning in Germany to avoid eating cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce has been withdrawn this morning. The warning for bean sprouts and other sprouting vegetables still remains in force. Last week, Wageningen food technology microbiologist Wilma Hazeleger declared that the bean sprout is a more likely suspect than cucumber for the EHEC-outbreak. Meanwhile, 29 people in Germany have died as a result of the EHEC-infection.
