Another Vici for Wageningen at last

For the first time in five years, a Vici grant has gone to a Wageningen researcher. Erwin Bulte will receive a maximum of 1.5 million euros.

Bulte is professor of Development Economics and has published in journals including Science on the resource curse: the hypothesis that mineral resources are more of a curse than a blessing for developing countries. The conclusion reached by Bulte and an international colleague was that dependence on mineral resources does not lead to armed conflict.
Bulte has also done research on the spending patterns of poor Chinese in the rural areas. He discovered that they spend more on celebrations, parties and presents than they can afford, but they carry on doing so for reasons of status.
The last time a Vici grant went to Wageningen research was in 2005, when Harro Bouwmeester hit the jackpot. /AS and NM
