Geurende koffie?
Misleading
The WUB of November 13 contained an article on the collaboration between the University of Lavras, Brazil, and Wageningen Agricultural University and CPRO-DLO. Although limited in its scope, the article itself was informative and entertaining, but the headline was misleading: Establishing collaboration: good Brazilian researchers for free. By using a headline which is more a result of bias than fact, Jacqueline van Wetten, the writer of the article, has caused quite a bit of anger and uneasiness among the Brazilian communities in Wageningen and at the University of Lavras
This headline strongly suggests that the cooperation was mainly established because WAU and CPRO could get good Brazilian researchers for free. The truth, however, is different. In the first place the Brazilian researchers are not completely for free. It has been agreed that under the cooperation fees will be standardized at a relatively low level, meaning that some financial input from the side of WAU is included. Secondly, and more important in this respect, WAU will provide a number of Fellowships for PhD students as well as visiting scientists to the collaboration each year. This was made public during the final session of the recent visit, which was attended by the reporter. In addition, visits of WAU staff to Brazil for courses and research projects are for the larger part financed through WAU funds. This also shows that the cooperation is (much) more than bringing over Brazilian students to Wageningen. The visit of the WAU delegation to UFLA earlier this year and the visit of the UFLA delegation to WAU have generated great enthusiasm on both sides to establish a long-lasting collaboration to the benefit of all parties involved. This poorly chosen headline suggests that the cooperation is unbalanced, and thereby throws a negative light on the intentions of the Dutch partners, is unnecessarily offending to our highly esteemed Brazilian partners and is destructive to the beginning cooperation. Brazilians are not only good researchers but also equivalent partners
