At midnight on January 30th, Chinese students at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC) in Enschede celebrated the beginning of the Chinese New Year with a bang. Approximately 100 party goers attended the event organized by Yang Hong a Chinese MSc student in the Department of Geology. Even the Chinese Embassy got involved, Ms. Hong explained, They gave us 500 Guilders to throw a New Year's Eve party. Some people also made private donations so we had a lot of fun!" This money provided a stream of alcohol and Chinese dumplings. The fireworks which crowned the event, were donated anonymously. Having been to China more than 50 times, Prof. van Genderen from the Department of Earth Resource Surveys was glad to join the party, I helped to get a permit and I requested that the police turn off the street lights and block the road off. I also asked someone to come and light the fuses." Prof. van Genderen also contributed to the party atmosp here by sharing 4 bottles of his own Moutai, Chinese whisky with a 58% alcohol content. It's pretty powerful, so you can imagine how funny it became, playing games such as picking up glass marbles with chop sticks!" Chinese students in Wageningen rented the International Club for a party, but held the event a day early since the venue was not available on the night itself.
