Number of foreign students on the increase

Since the start of the MSc programmes for international students in 1971 the number of both students and MSc programmes has grown steadily. Last year the newest MSc programme Urban Environmental Management was set up, and Wageningen Agricultural University now offers a total of thirteen programmes. Mr Kamphuis from the Dean's Office reports that for the 1995 - 1997 programmes 135 students have registered, which means a rise of about 10 % compared with last year. Mr Kamphuis adds: You should bear in mind however that these are still gross figures and will change slightly." The distribution of the students over the different programmes is as follows:

  • = Agricultural Economics & Marketing: 14
  • = Agricultural Engineering: 3
  • = Animal Science: 12
  • = Aquaculture: 15
  • = Biotechnology: 10
  • = Crop Science: 12
  • = Ecological Agriculture: 6
  • = Environmental Sciences: 14
  • = Geographic Information Systems: 2
  • = Management of Agricultural Knowledge Systems: 19
  • = Soil & Water: 16
  • = Tropical Forestry: 14

The Geographic Information Systems programme starts at the International Institute for Aerospace Surveys and Earth Sciences (ITC) in Enschede, and continues in Wageningen from April 1996 onwards. So far 16 students have registered at ITC for the 1995 - 1997 GIS programme. The two students listed above are Dutch and are part of the regular GIS programme. The Urban Environmental Management programme which starts in Rotterdam at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) will welcome 17 new students.
