Following a request from the International Student Panel (ISP) last autumn, the Library approached the University Board of Directors to try to find a way to keep the Jan-Kopshuis Library open in the evening. In a time of budgetary restraints, the Board of Directors was unable to offer extra funding for this proposal. The Dean's office was brought into the discussion, and they offered 20,000 guilders as contribution towards the costs of evening opening for one year. According to Deputy Librarian Kuindersma, the offer from the Dean's office was very generous, but unfortunately far short of the 80,000 guilders per year which is a bare minimum. Unless the money can be found it will be impossible to arrange for evening opening hours." Deputy Librarian Kuindersma explained that while money for longer opening hours was not available, there are technological avenues which can be explored. Computer facilities could be arranged, so that students wishing to order books in t he evening could do so by computer, and then pick them up the following morning. Such facilities could be installed in the Leeuwenborch library which is open in the evenings. The library is awaiting a response from ISP regarding this option.
