Festival to launch Association of African Professionals
The recently established Association of African Professionals (ASSAP) is a network of over 30 African professionals, including academics, artists and journalists, living in the Netherlands. The majority of these professionals are lecturers at Dutch universities. ASSAP aims at providing professional advice on issues on Africa. An increasing amount of attention is being paid to Africa in the publicity campaigns organised by various development organizations aimed at countering the mood of despair about Africa promoted in the media. Despite all these images and ideas about the continent it is still difficult to obtain an accurate picture of what is really happening in Africa. ASSAP believes that the best way to get information on what is really going on in Africa is to enable Africans, living in the Netherlands and abroad, to shed their light on what they consider to be the most important developments at present, and to present their views on the future of their continent. Their opinions
are too seldom heard in debates about Africa.
In this context a festival has been organised for this coming weekend (14th and 15th October 1995) in Theatre the Balie in Amsterdam. ASSAP will introduce itself and present its activities. Saturday evening, 14th October is a cultural evening: there will be music, story tellers and poets and the evening will close with music by Thoko Mdalose & the African Vibrations. As well as this cultural festival two debates have been organised. The theme on Saturday evening is Democracy & Economy and Africa and on Sunday evening Africa Today: The Political Economy of a Continent. Reservations can be made through Theatre De Balie: 020-6232904.
