Vici grants

Two Wageningen researchers, Dr René Wijffels and Dr John van der Oost have both received NWO Vici grants worth 1.2 million euros each, awarded to ‘excellent scientists’. Professor Wim van der Putten, who holds an endowed chair in Functional Biodiversity, also received a similar grant. The three can use the money to set up their own research groups for the coming five years. Microbiologist Van der Oost will use his money for research on how archaea organise their lives. Bioprocess technologist Wijffels intends to spend the money on optimising the production of useful substances by algae. Van der Putten will do ecological research on plants that grow in more northerly areas as a result of climate changes. / KV
