Chile grants

Ten PhD students and post doctoral researchers from Chile will come to Wageningen each year for the next five years, financed by a grant from the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (Conicyt).

President of the Executive Board, Aalt Dijkhuizen, signed an agreement on Monday 5 March with the Chileans, who are financing research on food quality and safety, bio-fuels, aquaculture and natural resources. Dijkhuizen also signed agreements with the University of Chile and the Santo Tomas University. Many of the researchers will probably come from these universities, although it is not an exclusive agreement, according to Peter Zuurbier, the Wageningen UR representative in Latin America. Chile is investing heavily in nutrition research as it wants to strengthen its agricultural export position. Zuurbier: ‘Conicyt sought strong partners in various scientific fields throughout the world, and luckily Wageningen UR is one of these.’
