Willem + stone

‘You have to be careful. What breaks off can’t be put back again’
Roelof Kleis

A holiday course in France 15 years ago planted the seed. Ever since then Willem de Visser has been chipping away artistically at stone. ‘Nice, working with your hands. Imposing your will on that hard material’: this is how Willem sums up what it’s all about for him. He started with smoothly polished abstract works. That proved to be too much work. ‘Now I keep it rough.’
