Wageningen second biotech town

Wageningen is the second most important city in the world when it comes to the generation of new biotechnology knowledge, say two Utrecht researchers who counted the publications in three major biotechnology journals between 1986 and 2008 and identified the competitive power of different regions.

The researchers note the rise of Asian cities in the development of biotechnological knowledge and the decline of European and American cities. But Wageningen holds its own and shows a steady growth. Only Cambridge Massachusetts, home of MIT, produced more new biotechnological knowledge in the last 20 years. Wageningen outstrips cities such as London, Seoul, Tokyo and Zurich.
