Over 25 percent of all households in Wageningen is a student household. With this figure, Wageningen has passed even Groningen (22 percent). The latter has topped the lists with the largest percentage of students for years. This was calculated by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Every student living in a student house represents one household. In this calculation, it does not matter whether the student shares every facility beyond the front door with others or lives in an individual housing unit.

CBS based the report on income statistics from the Tax and Customs Administration, in the years 2011 to 2015. From these data, it can be extracted who has received student loans in those years. The number of student households in Wageningen drastically increased between 2011 and 2015: from 3800 to 4900, an increase of 29 percent. The largest increase in student households was between 2013 and 2014, when an additional 400 households came to be.

WUR’s student population currently consists of 11,150 students – both bachelor’s and master’s students, of whom 6,275 are women – representing 56.28 percent.

2016 was not included in the calculations, as not every taxpayer has sent in their data for that year yet. It is known on the national scale, but the regional numbers can vary significantly. This is the reason why CBS is not sharing data about 2016 with third parties.
