Een van de grootste boosdoeners van voedselverspilling is de 'tenminste houdbaar tot'-datum. Consumenten denken vaak, ten onrechte, dat die datum iets zegt over de voedselveiligheid. Tot aan de tht-datum garandeert de fabrikant de kwaliteit (smaak, textuur, geur, kleur). Ook na die tijd zijn voedingsmiddelen vaak nog prima eetbaar.
Meer eten inkopen dan nodig en te veel eten klaarmaken leiden ook tot veel verspilling.
